The Hidden Gem of the Sheridan-Verse: My Review of ‘Wind River’

If you’re scrolling through Netflix looking for something that will actually keep you glued to your seat, stop right here. I just finished Wind River, and honestly, it’s one of the best thrillers I’ve seen in a long time.
What blew my mind—and I actually didn’t realize this until the credits rolled—is that it was written and directed by Taylor Sheridan. I knew him from Yellowstone, but I had no idea he was the mastermind behind these intense, gritty crime mysteries. It turns out he’s the same guy who wrote Sicario and Hell or High Water, so if you’ve seen those, you know exactly the kind of “edge-of-your-seat” tension you’re in for. He has a serious gift for making the setting feel just as dangerous as the criminals.
The cast is absolutely top-tier. Jeremy Renner gives a quiet, powerful performance as a veteran tracker helping the FBI, and Elizabeth Olsen is fantastic as the rookie agent who is clearly in over her head with the brutal Wyoming winter. But the real “hey, I know him!” moment was seeing Jon Bernthal (yep, Shane from The Walking Dead). Even though his role is smaller, he is incredibly impactful and brings that same intensity he’s known for.
The story follows the investigation of a tragic death on a remote Native American reservation. It’s a slow burn that builds into a visceral, heart-pounding finale. It’s haunting, beautiful, and heartbreaking all at once. If you love a smart mystery that doesn’t treat the audience like they’re on autopilot, add this to your list tonight. You won’t regret it!
What other Taylor Sheridan projects have you seen lately?
